VA Central Iowa Health Care System

Medical Foster Home Program

The Medical Foster Home Program (MFH) is a voluntary program that offers safe, long-term care in a home like setting. MFH is an affordable comprehensive care housing alternative for Veterans.

The VA Central Iowa Health Care System is proud to be among the VA Medical Centers across the country providing this option for our Veterans in Central Iowa. Our MFH program began in 2008 with our first Heroes choosing to live in a private home instead of a facility.

Our Medical Foster Homes are located near the Des Moines VA Medical Center. Some are in the city while others are in rural areas or small towns around Des Moines.

Over 50 Veterans have been served in our MFH program and currently we have seven MFHs with a capacity for 13 Heroes. Our Veterans receive first rate care and tell us they are very satisfied with the program. The advantages of the home setting is evident – Veterans enjoy private rooms, home-cooked meals, freedom and flexibility of daily routines.

Our Angels

Medical Foster Home (MFH) caregivers are very special people. Many are Veterans themselves or are from military families. Others have taken care of family members or friends in the past. Some have formal training while others are “natural caregivers” with no special preparation. However, all are eager to open their hearts and homes to Veterans who need them.

There are other differences too. Some are older, some younger. Some have children at home while others are empty-nesters with room to spare. Some are single and others have spouses who assist with their Veterans’ care or who work outside the home. Our Angels can choose to care for up to three Heroes and in all cases caregivers and Veterans meet and choose each other.

MFH Angels provide a home and a range of services from meals and help with medications to assistance with personal cares, supervision and transportation. Providing social opportunities for the Veterans both at home and in the communities are also important features of the program.

Caregivers commit to their Veterans who in most instances, live in the Medical Foster Home for the remainder of their lives.

Our Heroes

The focus of the MFH program is on Veterans who need care, are not able to live independently and do not have family or friends able to care for them. Veterans choose to live in VA Medical Foster Homes as an alternative to nursing home placement

The program allows Veterans to enter the program with their spouses and some Veterans have been able to keep their beloved pets with them.

The MFH Veterans enjoy the independence, freedom, and privacy of living in a family home plus the flexibility of personalized care.

Veterans are able to meet prospective MFH caregivers and tour the available homes before deciding to join the program.
